Color and texture comparison swatches from L-R: A – MAC Russian Red B – MAC Ruby Woo C – Inglot 408 Matte D – Chanel Pirate lipstick. A classic red that every woman should have on her makeup collection. Russian Red can also be Asian Red, American Red, African Red, anybody's red, really! It is such a universally flattering red lip. I have another lip swatch video for you. I forgot how much I love a red Iip. I apologize for my hair haha it just was not cooperating.

Ruby Woo and Russian Red are well known MAC lipsticks, but which one should you get if you can't decide between the two hyped up lipsticks? This is MAC's Ruby Woo vs Russian Red, a comparison between the two.

Ruby Woo [ UK]

Ruby woo russian red swatch blue
  • Retro matte finish
  • Electric/almost neon red
  • Blue toned red
  • Dry formula
  • Doesn't apply as smoothly

I don't know anyone who hasn't heard of/ thinks this color is gorgeous; there's a reason it is so hyped and has reached ‘cult classic' status. Ruby Woo looks gorgeous on literally every skin tone whether you are super fair skinned, dark skinned and everything in between. If you're looking for a matte red color that really stands out and looks like an almost electric/ neon red, this color is for you.

However, there is one major downside to this shade that tends to turn people off: the formula.

Ruby Woo is a retro matte shade, which is one step drier than matte, so of course you would expect it to be drying on the lips, but this lipstick takes the word dry to a whole new level. Since this is so dry, applying it can be a little difficult; it tugs at the lips and doesn't glide on smoothly.

Ruby Woo Russian Red Swatch Palette

I find that you really have to weigh the pros and cons of this lipstick.

Pros |

  • Stunningly gorgeous shade that really amps up any look; even if you just wear this with lots of mascara you will look glam.

Cons |

Ruby Woo is a classic, bright-red matte lipstick that flatters every skin tone and is a favorite of many celebrities, including Rihanna, Lauren Conrad, Sia, Christina Hendricks,. Russian Red is gorgeous! I went to MAC to get red lipstick, with my mind set on Ruby Woo. The saleswoman had me try both Ruby Woo and Russian Red, which she thought would go better with my coloring. Russian Red is a richer, deeper red, and not nearly as drying as Ruby Woo.

  • Dry, 'like a piece of toast'– My Big Fat Greek Wedding, anyone?
  • Emphasizes chapped lips and lip lines

If you suffer from severely chapped lips then I would probably skip Ruby Woo because it settles into the fine lines of your lips so if they are extremely chapped it won't be a good look. Even if your lips are not naturally chapped, I would go ahead and exfoliate and heavily moisturize before applying this lipstick, let the moisture sink in and then apply this lipstick. Do not, I repeat, do not apply this right on top of your lip balm because the color will not be as vibrant as it usually is. Your lips need to be bare, but not chapped. Does that even make sense? I hope so.

Russian Red| [ UK]

  • Matte
  • Creamier finish
  • Not as vibrant
  • Darker red with neutral tones
  • Comfortable on the lips
  • Doesn't tug on the lips

Russian Red is a lot creamier in formulation, but it definitely isn't as vibrant a shade as Ruby Woo. Russian Red is a little bit darker and more neutral. This has a matte finish, but it does not feel uncomfortable on the lips. When applying this lipstick from the bullet, it doesn't tug on the lips because it has a creamier finish that is almost moisturizing when compared to Ruby Woo. Even though it might not be as electric or neon as Ruby Woo, the color is still very vibrant and opaque even with just one swipe.

Pros |

  • Creamier
  • Not as drying
  • Doesn't tug at lips

Cons |

  • Not as vibrant as Ruby Woo
  • Darker than Ruby Woo

The Verdict |

If formula is very important to you and you despise dry lipsticks then I would definitely stay away from Ruby Woo and purchase Russian Red instead since it's still a gorgeous red shade. However, if color is more important then I, personally, would purchase Ruby Woo because it is more on the neon side.

At first glance, both shades are extremely similar, but if you are a lipstick aficionado then you will definitely notice the subtle differences in color. Regardless of your level of lipstick-expertise, you will definitely notice the differences in formula and applicability, but both red shades are classics in their own right. Even though I have both shades I generally lean more towards Ruby Woo if I want to wear a red lip. Now, if you're a complete lipstick hoarder like me, you should just go ahead and pick up both shades because they're both so pretty!

Mac Matte Lipstick Russian Red Review

I bought this all time famous lipstick named Mac Russian Red online after reading its rave reviews from Temptalia, Makeupalley and other bloggers. And must say thoroughly impressed! This red lipstick is a gorgeous and eye catching blue toned red. It is one of the flattering, glamorous red lipsticks which suit all skin tones and can be worn with both western and Indian attire. It is insanely pigmented, only one swipe is required for full coverage. I really love Mac Russian Red for being one of the universally flattering red of all time….suits Indian skin amazingly. The shade is very bright, perfect for night outs and evening parties. It stays for around 6 hours and leaves a red tint after fading. Even though the formula is matte, it is very easy to wear and does not dry your lips. The texture is creamy matte and transfers as well. The fragrance is signature Mac vanilla smell.

It comes in black tube with silver lining. It is very sturdy and travel friendly too. There is no indication of colour from outside but the colour names are listed at the bottom of Mac lipsticks.

Pros:

  • Pretty blue based red shade
  • A red which unbelievably suits all skin tones.
  • Superb Pigmentation. Just a swipe is enough.
  • Glides smoothly on my lips even though its matte
  • Does not dry out the lips. Better than Mac Ruby Woo in this department!
  • Instantly glams up any outfit and look. Its a show stealer.
  • Long lasting. Lasts upto 6hours on me.
  • Fragrance is signature vanilla.
  • Travel friendly. The tube is quite sturdy.

Cons:

Ruby Woo Russian Red Swatch Nail Polish

  • A bit expensive. But then who am I to complain….its Mac!
  • It does transfers a bit sometimes which can get irritating.

Price: Rs.990

VNA Rating: 4.5/5

Ruby Woo Russian Red Swatches

Final Verdict: Mac Russian Red is a blue based red which has a matte finish (not completely matte but has creamy finish too which makes it very wearable) and looks good on almost everyone. Every girl deserves a red lipstick of her choice in her makeup collection; this will be a serious contender! It stays longer and offers great pigmentation. Although on the expensive side, its great quality is completely worth the price. It glides on the lips really smoothly, does not pull or tug but transfers a little bit. It neither dries the lips nor looks patchy or accentuates the lines. I just love the feel of this lipstick and this is a must have lipstick in everyone's vanity!

Editor: Mac Russian Red v/s Ruby Woo: Although Ruby Woo is a better choice when it comes to the shade but it is insanely drying! The retro matte formula makes it difficult to work with it and with times it gets even drier! But then it just stays on and on never budging from its place. But if you have dry lips then Russian Red would be a better choice. And oh yeah the newly launch Mac Riri Woo is just a dupe of Ruby Woo.
